(KNOU) - A Wisconsin prison inmate has reportedly confessed to the murder of Teresa Halbach, the crime at the center of the Netflix series "Making a Murderer."

Filmmakers working on a new documentary about the case tell Newsweek the prisoner, who has not been identified, is a "notable convicted murderer." The confession was allegedly made on an audio recording while talking to Shawn Rech, who is directing an unaffiliated new documentary about Halbach’s murder called "Convicting A Murderer."

Wisconsin law enforcement is investigating the allegations.

The confession could possibly lead to the release of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, who were convicted of killing Halbach in 2007.

Both Avery and his nephew Dassey have been behind bars for more than a decade after being convicted for the 2005 murder of Halbach in Wisconsin. Rech says that the man who confessed is neither Avery nor Dassey.

The 2016 Netflix documentary series explored theories that Avery was possibly framed by local police for the murder after previously having served time and was exonerated for a sexual assault. DNA evidence implicated Avery in the murder, authorities say.
