(NOW) - A Nebraska woman is facing negligent burning charges after she torched love letters from her ex-boyfriend – and ended up setting her apartment on fire.

Police in Lincoln, Neb. say 19-year-old Ariauna Lillard used a butane torch to burn letters from her former lover. When a few of the letters failed to catch fire, Lillard set them on the carpet and went into her bedroom to take a nap, police say.

What she didn't realize was the letters she'd placed on the floor were smoldering – and eventually broke out in flames. By the time a smoke detector woke up Lillard, her apartment was on fire and filled with smoke.

Fire officials say Lillard was lucky that the third-floor blaze didn't cause damage to any adjacent units. But, officials say the fire did cause about $4,000 in damage to the building. She's due in court on Oct. 16.
